Patagonian Mara

Description

Patagonian Mara (Dolichotis patagonum), also known as Cavvy or Dillaby , is found in Argentina.

They have a rather unusual social structure.
Similar to their "rabbit" cousins, they live in communal warrens which can consist of up to 30 pairs.
However, the pairs themselves are completely monogamous and mate for life.
Now I know there are some that might say that sounds like an enviable goal for human society. After all, if it works with creatures that can be as reproductively driven as something that's basically an oversized "bunny", it should be a snap for advanced hominids. LOL! As with many behaviours though, one of the keys to this one hits a major translation snag at the animal/human level.

As you can imagine, such a bond takes work & the male is kept very busy. Mara are quite scent driven & nearly half their day is comprised of eating.
He follows his mate EVERYWHERE maintaining a scent concentrated area with a combination of urine, fecal matter & secretions rubbed from a set of glands just above the anus.
LOL! Remember that major snag I mentioned?
This area includes the female's physical body.
